POUGHKEEPSIE – A man with multiple prior convictions is going back to prison after being found guilty of attempted rape and endangering the welfare of a child.  Dutchess County Court Judge Edward McLoughlin handed down the sentence of 22 years to life in prison on Wednesday.

Dutchess County District Attorney’s Office Special Victims Bureau Chief Kristine Whelan prosecuted the case against Juan Andrades who was found guilty on April 4, 2022.

Matt Weishaupt, the Chief Assistant DA for Dutchess County said that the 52-year-old Andrades was classified as a persistent felon because of his six prior felony convictions and six misdemeanor convictions.

Andrades, after spending 10 years in prison, befriended a 14-year-old girl upon his release.  He is an alleged friend of the victim’s mother.  Testimony indicated that Andrades began showering the girl with gifts.  On one occasion he took her out to buy her a phone.  After the purchase, he stopped at a store and purchased condoms before taking the teen to a hotel in Fishkill in an attempt to have sex with her.  The physical act was thwarted, leading to the charge of attempted rape.
