MONTICELLO – The Hurleyville Performing Arts Center has been awarded an Artist Employment Program grant from Creatives Rebuild New York to be used to create a Black Library and community art space in the Village of Monticello.

The two-year grant totals $407,800.

The project was initiated by Monticello native artists and business partners Douglas Shindler and Michael Davis.

Shindler told Mid-Hudson News the facility will be more than just a conventional library with books on shelves.

“We really want it to be a library and a community art space, so what we are looking to do is to have space where artists can come and work, have artists talks, exhibitions, community events,” he said. “We really want to engage the community and have a lot of things to where we build a really collaborative culture in Monticello, in Sullivan County, and hopefully beyond that.”

The two men are currently looking for space for the library and Shindler would like to see it located on Broadway in Monticello.
