CARMEL – As the official start to summer vacations and long holiday weekends are upon us, Putnam County Sheriff McConville would like to remind residents that thieves often look for easy opportunities.

If you plan to be away in the coming months, the sheriff’s office has a dark house program informing patrol deputies that you are away and will alert them to periodically inspect the exterior of your residence for anything out of the ordinary. To request this service, call 845 225-4300.

The sheriff said it is smart to leave on some interior lights and install motion-detecting exterior lights.

He also advised that advertising your plans on social media should be limited to your friends and family and not shared publicly. And always remember to call immediately if anything appears suspicious in your neighborhood.
