ALBANY – There will be a Republican primary election for the new 51st State Senate District on August 23.

Senator Peter Oberacker’s attempt to knock challenger Terry Bernardo off the primary ballot failed as the State Board of Elections rejected his efforts.

Bernardo, a Second Amendment rights supporter and former chairwoman of the Ulster County Legislature, petitioned her way on the GOP primary ballot. “Republican voters put me on the ballot because they want change from the broken Albany status quo,” she said. “At this point, whoever wins the Republican primary will most likely be our next state senator.”

Bernardo said if elected, she will oppose bail and parole reform as well as efforts “to expand the giveaways to illegal immigrants.”

She said voters “can count on me to stand up for our communities and speak out every time against efforts to hurt our quality of life.”
