HYDE PARK – Two students who had weapons on the Dutchess BOCES campus during a June 9 incident have been charged by Hyde Park Police.  The original Mid-Hudson News account of the lockdown that brought multiple police agencies to the campus can be found here.

One of the teenagers charged was in possession of an Airsoft-style gun and the second was found in possession of a large kitchen knife.

Hyde Park Police Chief Robert Benson has said an 18-year-old student, with the Airsoft-style gun, was charged with unlawful possession of a weapon upon school grounds, which is a violation, and criminal trespass, a misdemeanor.  The student was arraigned in Hyde Park Justice Court on June 21.  The teenager’s name is being withheld because he is a first-time offender and is eligible for youthful offender status.  He was released on an appearance ticket.

The 16-year-old student was charged with criminal possession of weapons by persons under the age of 16, which are categorized under the juvenile delinquency laws in New York.  The teen was ordered to appear in Dutchess County Family Court.

The Hyde Park Police Department was assisted by the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office and the New York State Police.

Dutchess BOCES Superintendent Jason Schetelick did not respond to a request from Mid-Hudson News seeking comment prior to publication.
