MIDDLETOWN – A Middletown man with 47 arrests since 2006 has been charged with the attack on another Middletown resident Tuesday morning. That man suffered life-threatening injuries after being slashed with a sharp instrument in the chest, back and arm.

Within minutes of the attack, police arrested a man identified as “Amaya,” formerly Richard Fajardo, 33, of Middletown.

Police were called to the area of 6 Courtland Street at 8 a.m. for a report of a man bleeding and lying on the ground.

Officers performed life-saving medical interventions to control the bleeding and assisted EMS staff from Mobile Life Support Services in transporting the victim to Garnet Health Medical Center in the Town of Wallkill via ambulance.

The victim underwent surgery and is expected to survive, police said.

The initial investigation determined the victim and assailant knew one another and had engaged in a physical dispute that turned violent when Amaya slashed the victim in a basement apartment on Linden Avenue, police said.

The victim fled the scene, collapsed on the sidewalk near the entrance to the municipal parking lot on Courtland Street, where he was spotted by nearby residents who quickly called 911.

While police investigated the incident, an alert Beacon Street resident saw an individual running through the backyard of her home.

Officers responded and initiated a K-9 track locating Amaya, who matched the description of the suspect, in the rear yard of a residence on Linden Avenue.

He was placed under arrest and charged with the felonies of armed assault and criminal possession of a weapon.

Police said there does not appear to be any other suspects in the case.
