NEWBURGH – One day after Orange County District Attorney David Hoovler and County Executive Steven Neuhaus criticized the City of Newburgh for reducing the size of the first responding fire units, they inspected the site of a fatal fire at 68 Lander Street on Wednesday.

The firefighters’ union maintains that had they the full staffing levels initially, they might have been able to save the victim, and both county officials concurred with them.

DA Hoover said the city must “bite the bullet” and fund emergency services to the fullest levels to protect life and property regardless of the cost.

Mayor Torrance Harvey, meanwhile, told Mid-Hudson News that the city will not allow the fire department to “bankrupt” it.  To bolster the level of firefighters, he said the union should allow the city to supplement the paid force with volunteers.
