PORT JERVIS – School district officials gathered on Tuesday to ceremonially break ground on a new Port Jervis elementary school.

The 100-year-old building on East Main Street has served in the past as a high school and later, a middle school.

Work to fully renovate and expand the building will begin shortly.

In the new academic year 2022-2023, half of the current middle school will be converted into a learning space for seventh graders. Eighth-grade students will attend the 2019 campus in classroom space previously used by the Anna S. Kuhl School and Port Jervis High School.

The new addition to the East Main Street facility and half of the renovated building are scheduled to be completed and used for seventh graders.

The remainder of the building will be closed and renovated with the total project expected to be completed by the summer of 2024.
