Arrest made in Saturday morning murder

POUGHKEEPSIE – An arrest has been made in the Saturday morning shooting on Main Street that killed a man and injured two others.  The June 18 shooting occurred at approximately 4:30 a.m.

Carlton Belton, age 31, was arrested on Sunday, June 19, and charged with the murder of 27-year-old Atiba Proverbs. Proverbs was shot multiple times while in front of 386 Main Street.  He was transported to MidHudson Regional Hospital where he died from his wounds.

A short time after Proverbs was killed, Belton arrived at a Poughkeepsie hospital with a gunshot wound to the abdomen.  He underwent emergency surgery on Saturday.  Police are investigating to determine the identity of the person that shot him.

Belton has a felony record, and he was indicted for felony robbery and weapons possession after robbing a man at gunpoint in Newburgh in 2013.

A third victim, a 40-year-old city resident was brought to a local hospital in a private car with a gunshot wound to his leg.  The injury is not considered life-threatening.

Belton was taken into custody on Sunday, arraigned, and remanded to the Dutchess County Jail.

The investigation is ongoing.  A number of witnesses were present at the time of the shooting but have declined to cooperate with the police.  Anyone who may have information is asked to call the confidential police TIP LINE at 845-451-7577.
