RHINEBECK – The Kingston-Rhinecliff Bridge was closed to traffic for approximately an hour on Sunday as police interacted with a suicidal subject who was threatening to jump from the span.  The incident began around 12:45 p.m. on Father’s Day.

Police officers were on the span negotiating with the subject as police and fire rescue boats launched their crafts into the river in the event that the subject left the span.

The distraught person was seen climbing over the railing from the roadway where they proceeded to hold on to the railing.  During police negotiations, the subject was witnessed climbing back to the roadway for a brief period before climbing back over the railing on multiple occasions.

Shortly after 2 p.m. the subject climbed back from the railing to the roadway and surrendered to law enforcement.

The bridge was reopened to traffic at approximately 2:05 p.m.
