NEWBURGH – Quick action by Newburgh Town Police Sgt. Matthew Nadolny saved a man in the Hudson River near the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge on Wednesday morning.

At about 8:45 a.m., police responded to a report of a man, according to a third-party caller, who was contemplating jumping off the bridge.

The man was spotted in the water near the mid-bridge span, moving and waving his arms. He was attempting to swim toward the Newburgh shoreline.

As arrangements were being made to get a boat in the water to assist the man, his progress toward the shore was beginning to decline.

Assuming he was slowing his pace due to injury or exhaustion, Sgt. Nadolny used a jet ski from a civilian in the Newburgh Yacht Club and safely brought the man to shore where he was treated by EMTs.

The man did not appear to suffer any serious injuries and was transported by Town of Newburgh Volunteer Ambulance to the hospital.

The incident remains under investigation and police have not released the man’s name.

Assisting at the scene were State Police, New York State Bridge Authority, and City of Newburgh Police.
