ATHENS – The Greene County Sheriff’s Office Sunday arrested a Niagara Falls man in the Town of Athens on weapons, drugs and parole charges.
Sheriff’s deputies were assigned the welfare of a person in Athens.
When officers attempted to make a positive identification on the man, he fled on foot, but was taken into custody a short time later.
The man, identified as Lawrence Smith, Jr., was found in possession of a loaded handgun and crack cocaine.
He was charged with felony criminal possession of a weapon and criminal possession of a controlled substance.
Smith was also wanted by the State Division of Parole for absconding. He is currently under parole supervision for a prior conviction for criminal possession of a weapon.
He was remanded to the Greene County Jail without bail pending a future court date.
The sheriff’s office was assisted by the State Police and Greene County District Attorney’s Office.
