CORNWALL – A motorcyclist was killed late Wednesday morning when his bike went over the wall on Route 218 in the Town of Cornwall and plummeted 300 feet to the bottom of the mountain.

Cornwall Police Chief Todd Hazard said a 23-year-old New York City man was riding on Route 218 just north of the Highpoint lookout at around 11:14 a.m. when his bike went over the stone wall guide rail.

Cornwall Police responded to the scene while two state troopers located the operator dead a mile north of the Cornwall Yacht Club.

Preliminary investigation indicates that speed and driver inexperience were contributing factors to the crash, the chief said.

The victim’s name has been withheld pending notification of relatives.

Assisting at the scene were Cornwall-on-Hudson Police, Town of Highlands Police, the Cornwall Fire Department, CSX Railroad and the Orange County Medical Examiner’s Office.
