PORT JERVIS – The City of Port Jervis is known as a former railroad community and officials expect its history to be brought back to life with the creation of an open-air museum.

Developed directly behind the railroad car turntable, which still works, the exhibit, which opened this holiday weekend, features cars of all shapes and sizes including a circus car and dining car.

Bill Carlisle, a director with the Tri-State Railway Preservation Society, Monday sat inside the recently restored rail car that has been converted as a museum.

“This boxcar is a refrigerated boxcar from the Fruit Growers’ Express, which is a lease company out of Virginia. It actually was retired in January. It was an actual working car bringing fruit from Florida up from 1973 until this past January thanks to CSX, who donated three cars,” he said.

The living exhibits are expected to be a major draw for train enthusiasts across the nation.
