Fire destroyed a car and damaged a house on Sunday.

TOWN OF POUGHKEEPSIE – A car burst into flames while parked in a driveway on Sunday afternoon.  The fire began to damage the house and required fast work from the fire departments that responded.

The Fairview Fire Department was dispatched to a car on fire in the driveway of 71 Fulton Street at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday.  A passerby had noticed the fire and called Dutchess County 911.

As Fairview firefighters were arriving, the flames were advancing towards the house and had begun to melt the vinyl siding.  An engine from the City of Poughkeepsie arrived to assist their neighboring firefighters to prevent the house from igniting.

As a crew worked to extinguish the car fire, other first responders worked to protect the house.  The vehicle was destroyed by the fire and the house, owned by a New Jersey man, suffered heat, smoke, and water damage during the incident.

No tenants were home at the time of the fire.  The registered owner of the car arrived home shortly after the fire was extinguished and was being consoled by a friend while talking to Fairview Fire Chief Tim Gilnack.
