POUGHKEEPSIE – A member of the City of Poughkeepsie Common Council is considering a run for the newly-drawn NY 39th Senate District.  Democrat Evan Menist would be running against Republican City of Poughkeepsie Mayor Rob Rolison, who was recently endorsed by GOP committees in all three counties of the district.

Menist, the Democratic Majority Leader of the common council, represents the city’s second ward. On Saturday he announced that he is contemplating running for the seat that encompasses parts of Dutchess, Putnam, and Orange counties.

After State Senator James Skoufis (D-Cornwall), currently representing Senate District 39 would be running in a different race, Menist immediately said he is “seriously considering a run for the newly drawn 39th NYS senate district,” on Twitter.  “In the coming days, I’ll have discussions with my family, supporters, and local leaders to make a final decision.”

Menist is the legislative director for State Senator Elijah Reichlin-Melnick, who represents the 38th senate district in Rockland County.  Menist and Senator Reichlin-Melnick had previously worked together at Hudson Valley Pattern for Progress in Newburgh.

Menist, a native of New Jersey, learned about the City of Poughkeepsie while attending Marist College.  After graduation, he made his home in the city in 2011.  He married his wife Danielle in 2018 and they stayed in the city.

“This district is where I went to college, fell in love, put down roots, and began my career. To be able to represent the people of the 39th district would be an incredible honor and responsibility,” Menist said.  “As the majority leader of the Poughkeepsie Common council, a former research planner who worked in and with communities from Newburgh to Cold Spring to Poughkeepsie, and as the legislative director for a sitting State Senator, I am confident I have what it takes to serve my neighbors in the State Senate – now I must decide with my family what is the best way for me to do the most good in our community.”
