MAMAKATING – The Roosa Gap State Forest sign is back where it belongs after it was stolen on April 21.

The sign was stolen from the signpost on Firetower Road in the Town of Mamakating and information obtained from photos posted online led investigators to a residence in the town.

A search warrant was executed and the sign was found in the subject’s garage.

After initially claiming they found the sign on the side of the road, he admitted that he and a friend had stolen it. The second suspect who admitted the theft bragged he didn’t need a ladder to take it down.

Both men whose names were not released were charged with petit larceny and criminal possession of stolen property.

They are scheduled to appear in Mamakating Town Court in mid-June.
