GOSHEN – A second man has been convicted of murder in the shooting death of 21-year-old Chelsea Debidin of Walden in September 2019.

Cornelius Stubbs, 50, of Newburgh was found guilty by an Orange County Court jury following a month-long trial, said District Attorney David Hoovler.

“We believe that it had domestic implications as well as, perhaps, drugs as a motive,” he said.

When sentenced in September, Stubbs, who has an extensive criminal history, is expected to be sentenced to life in prison without parole.

His codefendant, Carlos Rivera, 49, also of Newburgh, who pled guilty early this month, faces 30 years to life in prison when sentenced in August.

Debidin was in the New Windsor apartment visiting her boyfriend, who is the brother of the mother of one of Stubbs’ children.

Stubbs and Rivera had burst into the apartment with the intent of shooting Stubbs’ girlfriend, who had broken off their relationship. In addition to the murder of Debidin, her boyfriend, the brother of Stubbs’ ex-girlfriend, was wounded.

“The horrific tragedy perpetrated by these defendants stands as a stark reminder of the dangers that escalating domestic and intimate partner violence can pose not only to those who had been directly involved in a relationship with an offender, but to others as well,” said Hoovler.
