POUGHKEEPSIE – City children were given the chance to enjoy the outdoors and do some fishing at Morgan Lake in Poughkeepsie on Sunday’s “Hooked on Fishing” day sponsored by the police department’s Police Athletic League (PAL).  More than 60 children, escorted by family members, went fishing for trout that were stocked in the lake just days ago.

“The PAL works diligently to give kids in the City of Poughkeepsie opportunities that they might not otherwise have access to,” said Poughkeepsie Police Lieutenant Mel Clauson, the President of the PAL.  “Our officers want to give the kids an opportunity to avoid the pitfalls associated with a lack of activities, and, with the help of our sponsors, this is one of our alternatives.”

Supported by the Dutchess County Federation of Sportsman’s Club and Stewart’s Shops, along with local sponsors Baroni Recycling and the Corbally Gartland Law Firm, families arrived at Morgan Lake for a chance to fish for free.

“My daughter has never been fishing before and this is a great way for both of us to learn,” said mother Lisa Hernandez. “The policemen have been very helpful and even gave my daughter a brand new fishing pole that they showed us how to use.”

The sportsmen’s federation arranged for more than 200 trout to be stocked in the lake for the annual event that was revived in 2021.  Members of the Poughkeepsie Fire Department showed up to provide assistance to their fellow first responders and gave kids an opportunity to tour the fire engine and ladder truck if they chose.

The PAL purchased and distributed 66 fishing poles and basic tackle boxes to children who didn’t bring their own.

“Our officers and the always helpful Mr. Rose and others from the Federation hustled to get the poles assembled for the kids and it was very well received,” Clauson said.  The children were also provided donuts and beverages provided by the local Stewart’s Shop.

Mayor Rob Rolison spent time at the event to thank the city employees and visit with the families.  “I am thrilled with the number of people enjoying this great event,” Rolison told Mid-Hudson News.  “The PAL and Kenny Rose, along with the volunteers have been letting our children and families experience fishing that they might have never had the chance to enjoy. I can’t give enough thanks for everyone’s dedication to the city.”
