MID-HUDSON – You are going to need a good air conditioner or high-powered fan indoors today as temperatures are expected to reach the low 90s in the region.

The National Weather Service said a heat advisory remains in effect from noon to 8 p.m. on Saturday with temperatures in the low to mid-90s. It will cool down – slightly – with the thermometer only hitting 90.

The National Weather Service said the combination of hot temperatures and high humidity levels may cause heat illnesses to occur if precautions are not taken.

Those include drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors.

Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances.

Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening.

Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke, wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing when possible.

To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or airconditioned environments.

Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded locations.

The National Weather Service said heat stroke is an emergency and anyone suffering from it should call 911.

Municipal swimming pools typically open for the season on Memorial Day Weekend, so pool-goers are out of luck today, unless, of course, they have already opened their backyard pool. There is always the garden hose or sprinkler for a little cooldown, if possible.
