MONTICELLO – A Cleveland, Ohio man was sentenced in Sullivan County Court o0n Thursday to 7 ½ years in state prison for illegally possessing a gun.

Kenzell Griffin, 24, has previous felony convictions in Ohio, possessed a .9 mm pistol loaded with 14 rounds of ammunition in a black drawstring bag in the vehicle when he crashed near exit 113 on Route 17 in the Town of Mamakating on October 30, 2020.

The case was set for trial when he entered a guilty plea on Thursday to criminal possession of a weapon.

During the investigation, forensic testing determined his DNA was on both the trigger and slide of the weapon.

In addition to the prison time, Griffin will face five years of post-release supervision.

“The sentence imposed today reflects the gravity of this defendant’s conduct and should serve as a deterrent to those who might consider illegally possessing handguns in Sullivan County,” said District Attorney Meagan Galligan. “Our law enforcement community is committed to working together to keep our communities safe, and this case underscores the seriousness with which we will continue to handle investigations like this.”
