ELLENVILLE – Police responded to the Ellenville Junior High School on Monday for a report of a student with a knife.  When police arrived shortly after 9:30 a.m., the student had been disarmed and isolated in a room.

Ellenville Police Chief Phillip Mattracion said the 13-year-old student used his backpack to sneak an eight-inch kitchen knife into the school with the intention of using it to stab a staff member in the building.

The juvenile was taken into custody and transported to Garnett Regional Medical Center for a psychiatric evaluation.  When the evaluation is completed, the juvenile will face criminal charges in the Ulster County Family Court.

“The actions that this student took today could have ended very tragically,” the chief said. “Thanks to the quick-thinking actions of all involved this incident ended without injuries to any student, or any staff member.  Thankfully, there but for the grace of God, he was not able to execute his plan to fruition.”
