Fallen firefighter Jared Lloyd

WASHINGTON DC – Jared Lloyd, the Spring Valley volunteer firefighter that died while saving residents from a burning nursing home, was honored by President Joe Biden on Monday.  Lloyd was posthumously awarded the Public Safety Officer Medal of Valor on May 16, 2022.

The March 23, 2021 fire at the Evergreen Court Home for Adults claimed the life of Lloyd who, by all accounts, acted heroically in saving residents of the facility that burned to the ground.  One resident perished along with Lloyd, who was a 15-year veteran of the department where he served as a lieutenant.  His efforts are credited with saving 112 residents of the Evergreen.

Lloyd was on the third floor of the three-story building in the process of rescuing residents when the section of the building collapsed, said Rockland County Fire Coordinator Chris Kear.

It took first responders more than a day to recover Lloyd’s remains from the carnage created by the fire.  The fire resulted in criminal charges against the owners and government officials after an investigation into the records of the facility.

The Presidential Public Safety Officer Medal of Valor is awarded to public safety officers for acts of bravery made in an effort to save others.
