Sunday's DCVFA picnic at the Firemen's Home

HUDSON – Elderly firefighters residing in the Firefighters Association of New York (FASNY) Firemen’s Home in Hudson on Sunday were treated to their first in-person gathering since the start of the pandemic.  The Dutchess County Volunteer Firemens Association (DCVFA) sponsored the cookout for the members of the facility.

Dutchess County volunteer firefighters put together a complete picnic-style meal of grilled burgers, dogs, and all of the fixings for the 75 residents of the home, in existence since 1892.

The Firemen’s Home has had only one case of COVID-19 by a resident to date. “This incredible feat reflects the dedication of the staff and the adherence to visitation policies imposed by the Home,” according to Kathy Tolf of the DCVFA.  On Sunday all visitors who had contact with residents were asked to “mask up” and keep the men and women at the home safe.

After the meal, a short “parade” of two trucks and eight firefighters marched in review for the residents. The trucks were provided by Wassaic and Glenham-Slater Chemical Fire Departments.

Last year’s weekend cookouts were held with remote simulcasts from the pavilion to the residents in their recreation room, and the parades provided were viewed by the residents from the home, with no contact between residents and visiting firefighters. “Today was a welcome change for all,” added Tolf.
