SAUGERTIES – A Kingston woman has been arrested by Saugerties police after a lengthy investigation into unauthorized debit card transactions linked to the bank account of a deceased person, according to Police Chief Joseph Sinagra.
Sarah Schatzel, a 34-year-old woman who resides on Washington Avenue in Kingston, was arrested on Monday and charged with the felonies of grand larceny and criminal possession of stolen property. She was released with an appearance ticket for a future court date.
Chief Sinagra said his agency began an investigation in December after receiving a report of several unauthorized debit card transactions linked to an account belonging to a deceased person. The police investigation determined that Schatzel had stolen the debit card from the deceased at their time of death.
The investigation also determined that Schatzel used the debit card to make numerous unauthorized purchases in the Town of Saugerties and in the Town of Ulster.
The accused is scheduled to return to court on May 18th to answer the charges.
