MONTICELLO – Sullivan County District Attorney Meagan Galligan is calling for changes to state laws that hinder prosecution.  Galligan cited a recent case in which she secured a plea agreement that will send a New Jersey man to prison as a result of a fatal car crash.

On Wednesday, May 11th, Galligan secured a guilty plea from New Jersey resident James Greco to the charge of vehicular manslaughter by causing a May 2021 crash on Route 42 in Fallsburg.  The accident claimed the life of Jose Daniel Roldan-Roldan.  Greco admitted he had been driving his vehicle while under the influence of oxycodone and fentanyl.

Absent a plea agreement, Galligan said, New York law provides that Greco could be sentenced to as little as a fine or probation for this offense. The plea agreement secured by the Sullivan County District Attorney ensures that Greco pled guilty with the understanding that he is going to prison with a maximum term of no less than five years and up to six years.

“This case demonstrates that statutes pertaining to vehicular deaths in our state are inadequate to address the losses suffered by innocent people at the hands of those who improperly operate motor vehicles,” Galligan said, adding “We continue to urge our legislature to give prosecutors the tools we need to take offenders who endanger everyone who lives, works and travels through our communities off the road.”
