POUGHKEEPSIE – A man wanted by town police for stealing a handgun was captured by the City of Poughkeepsie Police Department this past week.

On April 1, the Town of Poughkeepsie police responded to a reported car break-in that occurred in the Arlington area of town.  The victim told town police that several items, including a legally-owned handgun, had been stolen from inside of the vehicle.

The investigation resulted in 42-year-old David Williams, previously of Fishkill, being named as a suspect.  The town police say that Williams illegally entered the car in Arlington and stole property, including the firearm.

On May 5, 2022, the City of Poughkeepsie Police located Williams and arrested him on an outstanding bench warrant from the Town of Poughkeepsie Court for unrelated charges.
Williams was turned over to the Town of Poughkeepsie Police and was additionally charged with two felony counts of grand larceny and one felony count of criminal possession of a weapon for the April 1, 2022 larceny.
On May 6, 2022, Williams was arraigned in the Town of Poughkeepsie Justice Court, where he was remanded to Dutchess County Jail with no bail.
Police have not released the location of the stolen forearm.  Police have yet to indicate how the City of Poughkeepsie Police came into contact with Williams or if the city officers filed any charges against the accused gun thief.
