FISHKILL – Motorists driving past the Town of Fishkill offices on Route 52 have taken notice of a “crime scene” involving a car that hit the utility pole in front of police headquarters.  The accident has been staged by the Fishkill police to raise awareness about the increase of DWI-related accidents that occur each year during prom and graduation season.

Fishkill Police Chief Keith Dworkin told Mid-Hudson News that the staged accident was suggested by Lieutenant Craig Wood who commands the department’s Special Services Unit, including Community Policing.  Wood was assisted by High-End Auto, the company that lent the damaged vehicle to the department.

“It’s a model to support New York State’s ‘No Empty Chair’ program and supplements our department’s campaign against drunk driving,” Dworkin said.  The marquee in front of the town office complex says “Enjoy your Prom, don’t drink and drive.”

Police Lieutenant Paul Schettino praised the initiative. “Our department, under the leadership of Chief Dworkin, has become progressively more proactive. We want our young people to enjoy their seasonal celebrations such as prom and graduation but we want them to do it responsibly.”
