PINE PLAINS – Senior Chief Petty Officer Shannon Kent, a Dutchess County native who was killed in Manbij, Syria during her fifth combat deployment on January 16, 2019, was posthumously honored on Saturday when the Pine Plains Post Office was renamed in her honor.

“Shannon’s life was nothing short of legendary – and our attempts to honor her today are futile compared to the scale of her bravery and sacrifice,” Congressman Antonio Delgado (D, NY-19) said during the ceremony.

  • “I know time doesn’t heal wounds like these, but what time has given us here is an opportunity to bask in the glory of Shannon’s life and legacy. And with that comes the hope that we may all continue to be inspired, as I certainly am every single day, by the light that she carried with amazing grace and a profound love of country,” he said.

Senior Chief Kent was one of four Americans killed in a suicide bombing while she was in Syria as part of Combined Joint Task Force – Operation Inherent Resolve.

The bill renaming the post office was signed into law on December 13, 2019.

Chief Kent was the recipient of the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart, two Joint Service Commendation Medals, the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, and the Joint Service Achievement Medal.
