Grandmother and toddler killed by garbage truck

TOWN OF POUGHKEEPSIE – A 72-year-old grandmother and her 3-year-old grandson were killed Monday when they were struck by a garbage truck in the eastern part of the Town of Poughkeepsie.  The incident occurred shortly after 1 p.m. in the vicinity of Mary Avenue and Stanley Street.

At the scene, a Mid-Hudson News reporter was told that a 10-year-old boy and his 71-year-old grandmother had been struck by a garbage truck owned by Royal Carting of Hopewell Junction.  Initial reports indicated that the child, later identified as a 3-year-old boy died at the scene and his 71-year-old grandmother had been airlifted to Westchester Medical Center with serious injuries.

Following further investigation, police officials indicated that the woman airlifted to the hospital was 72-years-old.  An additional update indicated that the woman had succumbed to her injuries at the hospital.

Police Lieutenant Shannon Rodriguez told Mid-Hudson News that the Royal Carting truck was operated by a 41-year-old male.  The collision between the truck and pedestrians happened in the roadway.

The investigation is ongoing and the Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department is asking any witnesses to the collision to contact the Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department  Traffic Enforcement Unit at 845-485-3680.
