Sheriff’s office improves emergency management efforts

POUGHKEEPSIE – Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office Lieutenant Shawn Castano has been recognized by Acting Sheriff Kirk Imperati for his work in emergency management.

Castano recently graduated from the FEMA National Emergency Management Basic Academy. Lieutenant Castano, serves as sheriff’s office Emergency Management Officer and is the first member in the history of the agency to complete this academy.
 “I congratulate Lieutenant Castano on his accomplishment. I recognize the necessity for the Sheriff’s Office to have a role within the emergency management discipline as we continue our planning, response, recovery, and mitigation efforts for various threats, both natural and man-made, that impact Dutchess County,” said Imperati. “We have strong working relationships with the Dutchess County Department of Emergency Response and county government, law enforcement, fire service, the municipalities within Dutchess County, and other partners at the state and federal level.”
Graduates from the National Emergency Management Basic Academy complete 12 online prerequisite courses before participating in 120 hours of classroom instruction and exercises. The classwork includes the Foundations of Emergency Management, Science of Disaster, Planning Emergency Operations, Homeland Security Exercise and Evaluation Program, and Public Information Basics. This session of the academy was facilitated by the New York State Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Services and was conducted between January and April 2022 in Kingston.
