POUGHKEEPSIE – A Rhinebeck man who was convicted of attempted murder for shooting a teenager in February of 2020 was sentenced this week for murdering a man while he was out on bail for the attempted murder charge.

Carl Hannans, 21, was out on bail for his role in the Garden Street shooting when he was arrested for the murder of Evan Davis at the MLK housing complex in April of 2020.  He was originally scheduled for sentencing in the Davis murder by Dutchess County Court Judge Edward McLoughlin in March but sentencing was delayed because Hannans allegedly committed another crime while being held in the Dutchess County Jail.  Hannans and two other inmates were found in possession of matches and suboxone while in jail.

At the April 8 sentencing, McLoughlin called Hannans an “empty soul” and stated “If I could give you more time, I would,” before handing down a sentence of 25 years to life in prison.  The new sentence will be served concurrent with the 2021 Garden Street sentencing by McLoughlin sending Hannans to prison for 23 years for the attempted murder, 23 years for the assault, 15 years for each of the four counts of attempted robbery, and 15 years for each of the three counts of the weapons charge.  All of the sentences will be served concurrently.
