New Jersey pair arrested for trying to burglarize Sullivan County homes

MONTICELLO – Two Paterson, New Jersey men were committed to the Sullivan County Jail in lieu of bail for allegedly trying to burglarize two homes in the Glen Spey section of the Town of Lumberland.

Charged with felony attempted burglary and misdemeanor criminal mischief are Daniel Soto, 21, and Jacob Gutierrez, 18, who were remanded to jail in lieu of $50,000 cash bail or $100,000 bond each.

Just before midnight on Thursday, March 17, the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office responded to a 911 report of a burglary in progress at 512 Decker Road in Glen Spey. When deputies arrived, they learned that two suspects wearing ski masks attempted to break into the home. One suspect appeared to have a gun.

The suspects fled before the patrols arrived.

A short time later, the sheriff’s office received a call about two suspicious men on the porch of a residence at 332 Decker Road.

Deputies responded to that location and determined the two men were the suspects being sought in the attempted burglary.

Two ski masks were also located in a nearby driveway.

Sheriff Mike Schiff said the incident remains under investigation an he urged anyone with information to call his office at 845-794-7100 or the confidential tip line at 845-807-0158.
