Fatal school bus accident involved a State Trooper

LAGRANGE – A Tuesday afternoon head-on collision between a school bus and a New York State Police SUV has resulted in a fatality.  The accident occurred just after 3 p.m. on Route 55 near the intersection with North Cross Road.

The collision between an Arlington Central School District passenger minibus and the State Police patrol vehicle, a Ford Explorer, has claimed the life of an adult aid who was working on the bus.  Lagrange Fire Department paramedics pronounced the victim dead at the scene.

Two adult students were on the bus at the time of the crash and were transported to MidHudson Regional Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The parents of those students have been notified.

The bus driver and trooper were transported to local area hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.

Maria Mercaldi is a neighbor who has witnessed four accidents at that location since she moved there a year-and-a-half ago.

“I had one crash where it knocked down my telephone pole; it flipped over about five times. Then another one landed in my backyard; they did nothing about it,” she said of the state. “Then another one on the guard rail, still did nothing about it. My biggest fear is that a tractor-trailer is going to end up in my house killing my entire family.”

Route 55 was closed until approximately 7:40 p.m. while first responders from several departments worked at the scene and police investigated the wreckage.

The investigation into the accident remains ongoing.  Anyone who may have witnessed the wreck is asked to call the State Police at 845-677-7300.
