HYDE PARK – Four teens were rescued after falling through the ice on a pond Sunday afternoon.  A female teen required CPR to be revived before being transported to the hospital.

Roosevelt Fire District Chief Lew Darrow is crediting Roosevelt Station 3 member Wendy Burns with saving the girl’s life around 5 p.m. on Sunday.

Firefighter Burns and her husband were traveling on Cream Street in the vicinity of Greenfields Park when her spouse Don noticed four youths on the thin ice of the pond.  According to Wendy, her husband thought something was wrong and turned the vehicle around.

While Mrs. Burns called 911 to request assistance, her husband began removing the kids from the water.  The female was unconscious.  Wendy Burns revived the girl with CPR.   Chief Darrow credited Wendy with saving the girl’s life.

Darrow said that, despite 66-degree air temps and thin ice, the four teens were allegedly going out to retrieve plastic lawn chairs that had been on the ice for weeks.

The Roosevelt department responded with several members and apparatus, including an ambulance.  They were assisted at the scene by ambulances from Northern Dutchess Paramedics and the Fairview Fire District.  Two of the teens were transported to MidHudson Regional Hospital for treatment.  The two others stayed at the scene and refused medical attention.  The teens were sheltered in a Roosevelt rig until their parents made their way to the scene.

The Hyde Park Police Department assisted at the park.  Roosevelt firefighters used caution tape to cordon off the area where the teens accessed the water.  The first responders also worked to remove the plastic chairs to prevent anyone else from trying to bring them to shore.
