BEACON – Dozens of veterans were treated to breakfast on Saturday morning in Beacon.  The free social event was sponsored by the MHA Dutchess Vet2Vet program and held at the VFW/American Legion facility.
“This is one of the more popular programs we have that gives veterans a chance to see old friends, meet new ones, and talk about their experiences in a comfortable environment,” said Anthony Kavouras, MHA Dutchess Vet2Vet program manager.
Alyssa Carrion, a Vet2Vet staffer said that more than 80 veterans responded to the breakfast of eggs, bacon, sausage, pancakes, hash browns, and more that Vet2Vet provided.  “This event was tremendous,” she said.  “We were approached by honor students from the Culinary Institute of America (CIA) who offered to cook the breakfast as part of their honor society commitment to the community, and they did an amazing job.”
Dutchess County Veterans Services Director Adam Roche commended the Vet2Vet staff and the CIA students for making Saturday’s event successful.  “Our Dutchess County veterans  enjoy events like this and the collaboration of the VFW, the American Legion, Vet2Vet, and the culinary students did a tremendous job.”
While the veterans consumed more than 360 eggs and 45 pounds of bacon along with other offerings, the vets engaged in conversation.  It gives us a chance to get together with people that we don’t have to explain things to,” said John MacEnroe.  “It gives us a chance to be ourselves and share our experiences with men and women who have similar stories to tell.”
