POUGHKEEPSIE – The proposed apartments and open space plan for the former Pelton Manor has been redesigned and recently received approval from the City of Poughkeepsie Public Arts Commission.

Partners Wayne Nussbickel and Steve Tinkleman had originally proposed building four new apartment buildings and converting the mansion into apartments.  After meeting with members of the arts community, the plan was redesigned, eliminating the mansion from being turned into apartments.  The proposal now calls for 36 units, down from more than 40.

“The manor itself will become a true draw for Poughkeepsie,” Nussbickel told Mid-Hudson News.  He explained that a committee including a member of Pelton Partners, a common council appointee, a representative of the city’s administration, and a member of the Historic District Landmark Preservation Committee will join with a member of the arts commission to best decide for what type of space the mansion will be converted.  “It could be a dance studio, art gallery, or any number of other expressions of art that will draw tourist dollars into the city.”

With the commission approval, the project is one step closer to beginning, pending approval of the historic landmark commission.  “We want to make Pelton a mart of the community and the latest collaborative effort by everyone is a benefit to the city,” said Nussbickel.
