HUDSON VALLEY – Russian President Putin’s invasion of eastern Ukraine “constitutes a grave violation of international law and is an affront to Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity,” Democratic Congressman Antonio Delgado (NY-19) said on Tuesday.

State Assemblyman Colin Schmitt, a conservative Republican who is running against Democratic Congressman Sean Patrick Maloney (NY-18) this fall, said the Russian invasion “is the direct result of the Biden Administration’s disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan which sacrificed America’s standing across the globe.”

Schmitt, a staunch supporter of former President Trump, said Putin is “a despot and a dictator who preys upon weakness and only respects strength. With the fate of the free world handing in the balance, it has never been more important that we restore leadership and conviction in our nation’s capital.”

Delgado said the “incursion marks a dangerous new escalation in Russia’s efforts to destabilize Ukraine.”

The representative said, “We must work with our allies in NATO and the European Union to impose severe, robust sanctions on the Russian government. Putin’s actions have already galvanized governments, reinvigorated NATO, and strengthened the resolve of democracies in Eastern Europe.”

Delgado said, “While the coming weeks will be difficult, we must hold Putin and the corrupt oligarchs around him accountable.”

“The President is right. Russia’s attack on Ukraine is an invasion. We must take down Putin’s banks and punish his henchman while speeding support to Ukraine together with our NATO allies,” said Maloney.
