POUGHKEEPSIE – A man who had been accused of several violent felonies relating to a domestic incident in January of last year was sentenced to prison on Wednesday, February 16 for felony criminal possession of a weapon.  Edward Plummer was originally charged with several felonies, including attempted murder, assault, menacing a police officer, and arson.

After a hearing in the courtroom of Dutchess County Court Judge Edward McLoughlin in December of 2021, Plummer agreed to enter a guilty plea to the charge of criminal possession of a weapon, related to the use of a torch and accelerants.

On Wednesday, McLoughlin sentenced Plummer to 20 years in prison followed by five years of post-release supervision.  The convicted felon has been in the Dutchess County Jail and will remain there until he is transferred to the state Department of Corrections.

In early January of 2021, City of Poughkeepsie police and fire departments were sent to 18 Radcliffe Road after a report of man who had struck his stepson with a crowbar and then used several accelerants and a torch in an attempt to destroy his home.

Plummer, now 61, with no criminal history, attempted to ignite a fire, and then fled the scene in a car, with police pursuing him.  A short pursuit ended when Plummer drove back to the location, crashing his car into the garage.  Body camera footage from the police shows that when Plummer got out of the car, he was still carrying the torch and was encouraging officers to kill him.
