New Windsor house fire claims one life

NEW WINDSOR – A house fire that broke out at 7 p.m. Sunday claimed the life of a 60-year-old man.

The fire at 17 Shaw Road brought out Washingtonville firefighters who found the structure fully involved in flames when they arrived. Several other area fire departments were called to the scene to provide water to quell the flames.

One man, identified as 60-year-old Roger Smith, was found dead inside.

The cause of the fire is being investigated by the New Windsor Police Department’s Detective Division, the New Windsor Fire Inspector’s Office, Orange County Fire investigators and the county medical examiner’s office.

Two firefighters sustained minor injuries at the scene.  Neither required further medical treatment.

Fire departments assisting at the scene included Vails Gate, Coldenham, South Blooming Grove, Salisbury Mills, Chester, Maybrook and Montgomery.
