STEWART AIRPORT – A second international carrier will be providing overseas flights from New York Stewart International Airport.

Multiple sources told Mid-Hudson News that Play Airlines will officially make the announcement in one week. Airline officials could not be reached for comment and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which operates Stewart, has a policy of not commenting until official announcements are made.

Based in Iceland, sources said the low-cost carrier will operate a fleet of Airbus aircraft. The first route to the US will be from Baltimore Washington International Airport on April 20 and to Boston on May 11.

The Stewart service is expected to launch in June and will initially fly into Iceland and connect to European cities, eventually including Berlin, Brussels, Copenhagen, Goteborg, Keflavik, London, Paris, Stavanger, Stuttgart, and Trondheim.

Recently, Norse Airways, another startup, announces plans to fly between Stewart and Norway.

Another airline, Norwegian, was very successful, providing service between Stewart and the United Kingdom as well as Norway. It operated with new narrowbody Boeing 737 MAX jets. They were grounded after two fatal crashes elsewhere and Norwegian could not sustain operations on widebody jets they leased for several months.

Stewart is being marketed as a New York metropolitan area facility offering coach bus service connecting the Newburgh facility to Manhattan. The Norwegian Airways service was very successful for both travelers staying in the Hudson Valley to enjoy all it has to offer, or to take the 1 ½ bus ride to the Big Apple.
