Community mourns fallen firefighter

MONTICELLO – First responders from throughout the region braved frigid temperatures on Saturday to pay their respects to Forestburgh Fire Department Assistant Chief William “Billy” Steinberg, who died while fighting a fire in the Town of Thompson on January 15, 2022.

 

The funeral for the 37-year-old firefighter was held at St. Peter’s Catholic Church on Broadway in Monticello.  Firematic services for the fallen volunteer were held outside the church prior to the funeral mass.

 

Stenberg is being buried at the Hartwood Cemetery in Forestburgh.

 

Following the burial, family, friends, and fellow firefighters gathered at the Monticello Fire Department to celebrate Chief Steinberg’s life.

Steinberg was a lifelong member of the Forestburgh Fire Department, a member of Mahogany Ridge Hunting Camp, the NRA, FASNY, and the East Scout Association, Class of 2000.

 

He is survived by his parents, Jim and Laurie Steinberg of Forestburgh; three stepsons, Tyler Wheat, Kyle Wheat and Bandon Wheat; aunts, uncles, and cousins.
