YONKERS – A 24-year-old Yonkers man was shot in the calf early Monday afternoon when he apparently tried to commit suicide-by-cop as he pointed what appeared to be a gun at officers who responded to a report of a man waiving a gun on the third floor of 52 Main Street where he lives.

The man, who police said may have suffered from a mental health issue, waived a cell phone and another object fashioned into a crude imitation pistol that he may have displayed at the officers.

The man, whose name police did not release, was taken to a hospital for treatment of the gunshot wound.

An officer sustained serious injuries to his head, back and spine when he fell some 10 feet from the third-floor landing to the second-floor landing. He was also taken to a hospital.

Members of the Major Case Squad and Internal Affairs Division are involved in the investigation in conjunction with the Westchester County District Attorney’s Office.
