MIDDLETOWN – Smoking and vaping of any kind will now be prohibited in Middletown city parks, playgrounds, properties, parking lots and facilities as the common council has adopted a resolution to amend the city code.

Mayor Joseph DeStefano said the modified code follows the same path as was adopted months ago as it pertains to marijuana use.

“You don’t want someone standing 10 feet away from the skate park with kids skating and sitting there smoking marijuana, and it should be applied to cigarettes also, or vaping. It is for the protection of our young folks and for our community. It’s good legislation and gives us local enforcement,” he said.

Following a period of warnings, persons violating the code will be subject to fines.
