ALBANY – Almost a day doesn’t go by that we hear about school bus driver shortages as another impact of the pandemic. School districts and bus companies are offering higher hourly wages and sign-on bonuses to keep the buses rolling and the classrooms full of students.

State Senator Mike Martucci (R, New Hampton) is a former school bus company owner, and he is on the same page as Governor Kathy Hochul in supporting a proposal to eliminate earning caps on state and New York City retirees so they can drive school buses.

“I think this would be a great tool for school districts to help get more individuals behind the wheel, and importantly, help retirees who live in our area who might want to make some extra money driving a school bus,” he said.

The proposal has the support of the New York Association for Pupil Transportation.
