POUGHKEEPSIE – Several members of law enforcement teamed up to execute a search warrant on Friday morning at 12:30 a.m. and captured 21-year-old Manoj Ruparelia, who had an outstanding warrant for Attempted Murder. Ruparelia is the third suspect to be charged for the February 13, 2020 shooting of a teenager on Garden Street in the City of Poughkeepsie.

Police Captain Richard Wilson said the Emergency Services Unit and Neighborhood Recovery Unit executed the search warrant at 12 Gifford Avenue with the assistance of the FBI Safe Streets Task Force and city patrol officers and detectives.

When taken into custody, Ruparelia had a loaded semi-automatic 9mm handgun in his possession.  Both of his alleged accomplices also had illegal handguns on them when they were arrested. John Peterson, 22, of Newburgh was recently acquitted of all charges for his role in the shooting. Twenty-one-year-old Carl Hannans faced the same charges and was recently sentenced to more than 20 years in prison by Dutchess County Court Judge Edward McLoughlin. Hannans was out on bail for the Garden Street shooting when he allegedly shot and killed Evan Davis at the MLK Complex in Poughkeepsie. He is awaiting trial for that case.

Ruparelia has been charged with attempted murder, assault, attempted robbery, and criminal possession of a weapon. He is currently being held pending arraignment on the felony charges.

“Ruparelia’s safe apprehension is the removal of an individual from our community that is alleged to have committed violent acts creating a risk to all,” said Captain Wilson. “The City of Poughkeepsie Police Department and our numerous partners continue to collaborate and go to great lengths to reach safe and successful outcomes in making our City safer.”
