TOWN OF POUGHKEEPSIE – Serial car thief Franz Bakter, 33, has been arrested by the Town of Poughkeepsie Police on January 3 for felony criminal possession of stolen property.  He was arrested the day before by the City of Poughkeepsie Police for stealing a different vehicle.

This incident marks Bakter’s eighth arrest by the Town of Poughkeepsie Police in the last 60 days.

Town of Poughkeepsie Police officials say that on January 3, 2022, at about 5 p.m. their officers responded to a report of a stolen vehicle from the Arlington area of the town. A short time later, in the parking lot of Adams Fairacre Farms, officers located Franz Bakter with the stolen vehicle.  He was taken into custody and held for arraignment.

On January 4, 2022, Bakter was arraigned in front of Town of Poughkeepsie Court where he was released under the supervision of probation and was issued an appearance ticket to return to the Town of Poughkeepsie Court on a later date.

The “bail reform” changes to state law require judges to impose the least restrictive means that is necessary for the defendant to return to court.
