ALBANY – Democrat Governor Kathy Hochul, Monday, announced a proposal for term limits for the governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general, and comptroller.

She will introduce a constitutional amendment to set limits of two consecutive terms for those statewide elected officials.

Republican Senator Mike Martucci (R, New Hampton) supports the governor’s plan but said it should go even further.

“We should absolutely have term limits for the legislature as well – the State Assembly and the State Senate. I carry a bill, which is S5918 that does just that. My bill proposes that legislators in both the Senate and Assembly would be limited to a total of 12 years. We serve two-year terms; that would be six, two-year terms,” he said.

Any change to the state constitution would require votes by two consecutive legislatures followed by approval of state voters.
