MONTICELLO – Several children, under the age of 18, and some under 16, have been identified as those who posted threats of violence to Sullivan County school districts resulting in the closure of in-school classes on Wednesday in the Monticello and Fallsburg schools and a heightened police presence in Liberty schools, District Attorney Meagan Galligan said.

None of those threats was credible, she said. The kids who posted them face action through the county Division of Family Services.

Galligan said that type of behavior will not be tolerated.

“If you communicate one of these threats, we will find you. We will find you by invading your privacy and by invading the privacy that your family enjoys. It is not comfortable to have the police crawling through your cell phone, crawling through your family’s internet history, knocking on your door in the middle of the night, bringing you to a police station and potentially incarcerating you or expelling you from school,” she said.

The DA had a message for parents – to monitor their children’s online activities, speak to them about the consequences of “stupid decisions” and look for signs of mental health stress or weapons.

Meanwhile, Fallsburg schools are operating with remote learning today for students and staff. Students should log on via Google Classroom.
