NEWBURGH – In the wake of the insurrection on the U.S. Capitol, the City of Newburgh wants to declare its everlasting commitment to America’s democracy by declaring every January 6 as “Civics Day.”

Mayor Torrance Harvey, a history teacher, proposed the move.

“This shall be the first day where, we, the people, celebrate our tradition gained through gained through decades of struggle, of enabling American citizens to have the right to vote, to have free elections,” he said. “We know we live in a divided nation unfortunately at the current time. We know that everything is weaponized now.”

January 6, 2021, was the day when thousands of rioters stormed the Capitol building while Congress was preparing to officially certify the results of the presidential election declaring Joe Biden the country’s new leader.
